2010 Harper Charity Cruise
For the past 16 years Classic cars, street rods, muscle cars and specialty vehicles hit the streets of Motown and head to Harper Avenue between 8 Mile and 11 Mile roads in St. Clair Shores, MI for the annual cruise. The Harper Cruise is one of the most popular among area car buffs. “This event is up close and personal". Along the street, crowds of people will sit in their lawn chairs while families gathered on blankets and watch the parade of classics go by. Many businesses along the way offer free parking, with entertainment and of course plenty of food vendors. “It may not be the largest cruise out there but it’s the one we look forward to the most” is often heard while attending.
Mother Nature cooperated this year with perfect cruisin’ weather. Sunshine plus blue skies add up to a whole lot of beautiful vehicles on Harper all evening. All real estate along the street was covered with classic cars and all larger parking lots were also filled. Families had their chairs and blankets set up near the action There were an estimated 10,000 classic cars and 200,000 cruise fans in attendance. 2010 was a definite record breaker.
The cruise is presented by the Shorewood Kiwanis Club with cooperation of the city of St. Clair Shores Police Department. The cruise benefits area children charities. Tens of thousands of dollars are raised through the sale of T-shirts and the ever-popular Cruis’news “I Cruised Harper” mini street signs. Volunteers could be found on every corner and in the turn lanes throughout the entire route selling the cruise goods.
